Senior Bus Trip to Long Point Ranch and home of the J B Harrison Foundation

Description

Join Houston Audubon for a birding adventure to the private ranch of the J B Harrison Foundation. This trip will start at 7:30. We meet the bus near Memorial City Mall. Our return time will be around 3 PM.

Located just down the road from Brazos Bend State Park, in Fort Bend County, Long Point Ranch serves as headquarters for The James B Harrison Foundation.

The ranch is  approximately 1100 acres designated for charitable use activities.

Birding is the most popular activity at Long Point. Birding on the property dates back to 2012 when the first Christmas Bird Count was performed. During that first count 66 species of birds were recorded. Since then Long Point has become one of the most popular locations in the local area to bird during the Christmas count as the number of species observed grows from year to year. During our last Christmas count in 2019, our birding team recorded 85 species.

Whether it’s hiking around the horseshoe cypress ponds or bird watching at the rookery, there’s something for birders of all levels to enjoy. Locally known for its many Bald Cypress ponds, Long Point is also the home to its very own Great Kiskadee nest. The Great Kiskadee originally observed on the property during the 2013 Christmas count has made its nest at the Long Point Rookery. As many as 3 Kiskadees have been observed together. The 3.5 acre rookery comprised of the Bald Cypress trees serves as a nesting site for Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Little Blue Herons, White Ibises, Roseate Spoonbills, Black-crown Night Herons, Yellow-crown Night Herons and Green Herons. The property has even hosted a few Wood Storks on occasion.

Must be 50 or older. Space is limited to 20 participants. Masks are required at all times on the bus.
