Hi! This is my fundraising page for the 2025 Houston Birdathon. If you are unfamiliar with a birdathon, this is sort of like a marathon but much stiller, quieter, and less stressful. It also involves lugging around binoculars, sometimes cameras, and wearing big hats. In our current digital age, a birdathon might also involve staring at your phone a lot to identify and record things.
In seriousness, a birdathon is really a massive fundraiser for important conservation organizations. In this case, the Houston Birdathon raises money for the Houston Audubon Society which is responsible for much avian-centric conservation, education, and outreach in one of the nation's largest and fastest-growing metro areas. While all Audubon societies do great work, I'd like to point out that Houston Audubon is no everyday, run-of-the-mill Audubon society. Migrating birds in particular are threatened by a whole host of environmental changes, and they often rely on small patches of habitat in our city parks, neighborhoods, and commercial districts. Now is right around when millions of these birds are crossing the Gulf of Mexico, eventually (if they make it!) returning to breeding areas. Houston Audubon maintains some of the most important "first landing" areas for these trans-Gulf migrants like the High Island Sanctuaries and so this organization (out of all Audubon societies on the continent) might help one of the largest fractions of migrating birds.
In support of this cause, I will be birding along the Texas coast with the cleverly-named "Beakniks" on April 20th. Let's see how many wayworn travelers we can find.
Thank you for your time, attention, and contributions to this important mission!
