Nova’s passion for birds truly took flight during her time on conservation corps crews—one here on the Gulf Coast with the Texas Conservation Corps, and another in the Pacific Northwest with the Northwest Youth Corps. Working with the Texas Conservation Corps, she had the privilege of restoring habitats at places like the Texas City Prairie Preserve, Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s Indian Grass Preserve, Artist Boat Coastal Heritage Preserve, and Armand Bayou.

It was at Armand Bayou that Nova spent two months creating crate nests for the rookery island, and seeing birds take to the habitat she helped build sparked a love for avian conservation that has only grown since then.

Two years ago, a friend and mentor gifted Nova a pair of binoculars, and she couldn’t wait to put them to use at High Island. Visiting last spring felt like coming full circle, marveling at the incredible diversity of migratory birds stopping to rest and refuel.

Kassandra’s birding journey has been shaped by her love for the outdoors, her deep commitment to conservation, and her passion for connecting people with nature. She brings a bright enthusiasm and sharp eye to every birding adventure!

Today, birds remain a huge part of both our lives. Nova leads urban prairie restoration projects at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, making green spaces more sustainable and bird-friendly. Both of us are also active members of the Houston chapter of the Feminist Bird Club, where we join monthly bird hikes and advocate for creating inclusive spaces in birding. Together, we are excited to share our love of birds and conservation with the wider community.

This year, we’re thrilled to team up as the Chirpy Chicas for Houston Audubon’s Birdathon! Since 1981, Birdathon has brought together bird enthusiasts to support Houston Audubon’s mission of protecting bird habitats and fostering a deeper connection between people and nature.

We’ve set an ambitious goal of $2,500, and every contribution makes a difference! Your support will help protect the habitats that are so important to our feathered friends and ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come.
