As part of Houston Audubon’s 2023 Birdathon, we are teaming together to support birds and the habitats that sustain them. Our name, the Empid Yadas, calls attention to one of the most challenging groups of birds to identify, the empidonax flycatchers, also known as empids. Seeking to be a “yada” or knower of these challenging species requires deep study and humility. While the challenge of attempting to be a knower of any bird species reflects the inherent limits of human understanding, the stakes for learning as much as we can are high. Through careful study, deeper knowledge is possible, and is critical to the sustainability not just of birds but of all species. By providing essential sanctuary for birds in critical locations and advancing knowledge about the lives of birds and their interconnections with broader ecosystems, Houston Audubon supports this critical mission.

Our team members are:

Cin-Ty Lee | Diana Strassmann | Joan Strassmann | Dave Queller | Phil Queller | Twila Mulflur

We will together seek to identify as many bird species as possible in a 24 hour period.  We ask you to join us by giving as you are able.

There are two ways to give:

1. Donate a specific amount - use this page to donate.

or

2. Pledge an amount per bird species - please fill out this form. Last years team spotted 99 species. This year we're going for triple digits!

As a thank you, our biggest (non team member) donor will receive a signed copy of the Field Guide to North American Flycatchers: Empidonax and Pewees, by Cin-ty Lee, illustrated by Andrew Birch.

Thank you for your consideration!
